The sensory-friendly clothing checklist
Start with the clothes that already feel right, then shop the details: seams, waistbands, closures, fabric, care and whether the piece still feels age-appropriate.
Copy the shape that already works.
Note the cut, rise, sleeve length, waistband, collar and fabric of a favorite item before shopping. Comfort is often easier to reproduce when you identify the details rather than only the size on the label.
Check the hidden irritants.
- Tags or printed labels
- Inner seams and bulky stitching
- Elastic strength and drawstrings
- Zippers, snaps or buttons
- Fabric texture after washing
- Hoods, cuffs and tight necklines
Keep dressing age-respectful.
Needing help with dressing does not make someone younger. Look for comfortable versions of the styles, colors and brands that suit their age and taste rather than defaulting to children’s designs.
Buy one unknown at a time.
When trying a new brand or fabric, start with one piece and keep the return deadline visible. Wash only after you know whether the item can be returned once washed.
