20-minute backyard football

One choice. One simple play. A clear finish.

Autumn field sketch showing a football, two markers and choose, play, done.
1 · Choose

Throw, handoff or kick. Use the person’s usual communication method and allow time to answer.

2 · Play

Mark start and finish. Model once. Take a few turns. Walking, seated play or watching before joining all count.

3 · Done

Put the ball away. Show or say “done.” Move into the next familiar thing.

Make it easier

  • shorter distance
  • softer or larger ball
  • handoff instead of catch
  • no whistle
  • walking pace
  • extra response time
  • visual start / finish

What success can be

  • choosing how to join
  • one shared turn
  • staying near the activity
  • asking for more
  • asking to stop
  • doing it again another day
Field-kit shortcut: ball + two markers + drink + whatever communication and safety supports the person already uses. That is enough.

This is a family-life idea, not individualized medical, therapeutic or safety advice. Follow the person’s established support and safety plans. Adapt the activity to the person, not the person to the activity.
