Motherhood · From the family album

Get in the photograph.

For the mother who plans the outing, packs the bag, and takes the pictures: make sure there are some with you in them, too.

James and his mother smiling beside the water with their arms raised; James holds his blue-cased device.
Arms in the air. A moment from our family album.

I love this one of James and me. Arms in the air, a grey New England sky, a little silliness beside the water. This is part of motherhood I want to remember: enjoying each other’s company.

Hand someone the phone. Ask for a few pictures. You don’t have to arrange everyone, put away the familiar things, or wait for matching smiles. Leave room for the moment as it is.

And when you look through them, give yourself a little kindness. Keep the one that makes you remember being there together.

You belong in the family album.
