Hannaford · Our off-season Wells trip

A grocery run, then breakfast by the water.

Oakhurst eggnog cold brew, our own plates and glasses, and a waterside picnic table. A simple Saturday breakfast idea from our Maine getaway, with a grocery stop James was very happy to make.

The makings of breakfast on our Wells trip, before we found our table by the water.

On our trip to Wells, a quick Saturday morning stop at Hannaford became breakfast at a picnic table by the water. We had brought our own glasses and plates, so our grocery-store breakfast got a proper little table setting.

I’ve loved Hannaford for years. I lived in Vermont for a long time, and it is one of those familiar places I’m always pleased to see when we’re away. I was hoping for my favorite butter rum muffins. They were sold out, which was a small disappointment, but we found plenty else to enjoy.

We picked up assorted muffins, chocolate-frosted donuts, cold brew and Oakhurst eggnog. The eggnog added a Maine connection of its own: Oakhurst is a longtime Portland dairy.

At our waterside table, we mixed eggnog into the cold brew and made our own eggnog coffee drinks. James had his eggnog on its own. It’s never off-season for eggnog.

James had a good morning in the aisles, too.

James loves grocery shopping. He was enjoying himself so much that other shoppers commented, and we proudly shared that he is often the grocery-store trip leader in his classroom. Shopping is one of his favorite things to do, and it was lovely to have a chance to tell people about that part of his school day.

Then it was breakfast by the water: muffins, donuts, our little cold-brew experiment and time to sit together. We enjoyed it so much that we forgot to take a waterfront photo. The butter rum muffins can stay on the list for next time.

A small idea to borrow

Bring the table setting. Find the view.

Pack a few familiar things.

Our own plates and glasses made a quick breakfast feel like a picnic. Bring the cups and tableware that work for your family, along with a way to carry them home.

Let the shop be part of it.

Pick up breakfast and drinks you enjoy. If a favorite is sold out, leave room for another choice. For James, the grocery stop was a pleasure in its own right.

Choose a table that works.

Look for somewhere you’re allowed to picnic, with seating and a route that suit your group. We found a waterside table and settled in with our breakfast.

Before choosing your picnic spot

Check the route from parking, the ground underfoot, seating, nearby toilets and any picnic rules that matter to your family. This breakfast was part of our Wells trip; the exact Hannaford branch and waterside table are not identified in this field note.

Our eggnog cold brew

We mixed the bottled cold brew and eggnog in our own glasses. James enjoyed the eggnog without coffee.

The breakfast shop

Four things in the basket.

Our checkout screen showed $16.73 for cold brew, a quart of Oakhurst eggnog, a four-pack of assorted muffins and chocolate-frosted donuts, including the displayed tax and bottle deposit.

That is the total shown during our visit, rather than a current price quote. Bakery choices, seasonal drinks and prices can change.
