Freeport, Maine · From the family album

Wicked Whoopies: a little stop with a very large whoopie pie.

Orange walls, turquoise chairs, and a stack of whoopie pies taller than James. A Maine treat stop with a sense of humor.

A shop with a tower of whoopie pies has made its intentions quite clear. We are here for something sweet, and nobody is taking the décor too seriously.

Our visit to Wicked Whoopies in Freeport, Maine, gave us exactly the sort of photographs I love keeping: James in his pink shirt, a wrapped treat in hand, standing beside a display that is delightfully out of proportion.

The room is full of color. Orange walls, purple shelving, turquoise tables and chairs, blue flowers, and enormous red letters spelling “SMILE.” It is cheerful, a little theatrical, and thoroughly committed to its subject. A whoopie pie apparently deserves a pedestal. Several, in fact.

James wore his hearing protection, as you can see in the photographs. That belongs in the family album just as much as the treat and the pink shirt. The pictures also give another family a useful preview of the bright interior before deciding whether it looks like their kind of stop.

Plenty of color, right down to the shelving. This wider view is useful if you like to see a place before arriving.

What makes this worth considering is its scale as an outing. You can build a small plan around a treat shop without needing a whole afternoon of activities. A browse, a choice, a photograph if everyone wants one, and then on with the day.

My favorite detail is the contrast between the whoopie pie in James’s hand and the enormous versions behind him. One for the road; several that would require a moving van.

Keep the plan small.

Show the shop photographs beforehand if a preview helps. Bring the hearing protection or communication supports your family usually uses. If a particular flavor matters, call before making the trip: the shop’s selection can differ from the online store.

There were tables and chairs in the shop when these photos were taken. You can ask about seating when you call, or plan to take your purchase with you. A short visit is a perfectly reasonable plan.

The useful details.

Sound and light: Expect a visually busy setting: saturated colors, oversized displays and bright overhead lighting. The photographs cannot tell us how loud the shop will be during your visit. Ask the shop about quieter times if that would help.

Mobility and facilities: Our photos show indoor seating and the shop floor, but do not establish step-free entry, doorway clearance, accessible parking or restroom facilities. Call the store about the specific route and facilities you need.

Food: Wicked Whoopies’ current FAQ says it does not offer gluten-free or vegan whoopie pies. Check ingredients and any allergy or cross-contact questions directly before buying. Read the shop’s FAQ ↗
