A New England rainy-day outing plan
Rain does not have to cancel the day, but it does make transitions, wet clothes and backup food more important. Keep one main plan and one easy escape hatch.
Pick one indoor anchor.
Choose the museum, pool, bookstore, café, aquarium or other indoor place that is worth leaving home for. Build the rest of the day around it rather than trying to fill every hour.
Make the car part of the plan.
Keep a dry layer, easy shoes, a bag for wet clothes and a towel where they can be reached without unpacking everything. On a wet day, the car can also be the simplest quiet-break space.
Protect the food plan.
Check kitchen hours and whether the place allows familiar food. Keep a backup that works for your family so the day does not depend on a café line or a menu that changed.
Know the five-minute exit.
Before entering, know how to get back to the car and what the short version of the outing looks like. A smaller day is still a day out.
