Make our visit plan →Misty Harbor: the Wells suite-and-pool weekend that keeps things easy
Wells, Maine
A full kitchen, separate living space and indoor water can do more for a family weekend than a fashionable lobby. This is the kind of stay where the room can actually function as home base.
From our family notebook · a Maine overnight
The best part was that nothing had to be a big production.
There is a particular kind of relief in opening the door to a hotel room and realizing the room itself is going to help. Not merely look nice in photographs. Help. At Misty Harbor, the useful things were the lovely things: enough space to spread out without living out of a heap of bags, a kitchen that meant dinner did not have to become another outing, and the indoor pool waiting downstairs like a perfectly reasonable answer to the question, “What should we do now?”
We have become suspicious of weekends that arrive with too many verbs. Visit. Shop. Tour. Reserve. Hurry. This one worked better because the list was short. We brought in the bags, made the suite feel familiar, found the chargers, put the swim things where we could actually find them again, and went to the water. That was the event. No one needed to earn it by sightseeing first.
Wells is good for this kind of trip because Maine is outside the window even when you are not doing Maine particularly hard. The coast is close. There are places to get something easy to eat. You can take a drive, see the water, come back, and still feel as though you went somewhere. A swim can become the center of the afternoon instead of the leftover activity squeezed between adult plans.
What we remember is not a checklist of attractions. It is the feeling of everybody having a little room around them. Wet swimsuits could dry. One person could be awake while another was finished with the day. We could make food without negotiating a restaurant. We could go back to the pool because, wonderfully, there was no rule saying the second swim did not count as an itinerary.
That is increasingly our definition of a good family hotel: it gives the day somewhere to land. Misty Harbor did. The weekend felt simple, coastal, comfortable and ours—which, for us, is considerably better than impressive.
It is the kind of place we would choose again not because it asks to be remembered, but because it leaves room for the family to make the memory. That distinction matters to us more every year. Give us a clean landing place, a pool, a workable kitchen and the freedom to change the plan, and we can supply the rest.
Family story, lightly edited from our notes, memory and camera roll. The practical details below are kept separate and checked as their own field notes.
The easiest version of the day
Four beats. Nothing heroic.
Get the room working first: food away, chargers plugged in, swim bag in one place.
Let the indoor pool be the main event instead of something squeezed between sightseeing.
Use the kitchen or a familiar nearby meal rather than making dinner another transition.
Dry the swim things, prep tomorrow’s clothes, and keep the second day small.
Accessibility field notes
What actually changes the visit.
- Misty Harbor is an all-suite property, but suite layouts matter: published room information says one-bedroom suites are first-floor while two-bedroom and loft suites are second-floor with no elevator access.
- Confirm the exact room, bed layout and floor before booking if stairs or a closed sleeping area matter.
- The indoor pool and hot tub are core amenities, but hours or maintenance can change; reconfirm shortly before departure.
- The Wells Amtrak station is a few miles away and the property states it does not provide shuttle service.
Accessibility is specific to the person and to current conditions. Confirm anything that would determine whether the visit can work.
