Kittery Food Mart + Fort McClary

Kittery, Maine

One of our favorite Maine lunch plans: pick up inexpensive local food at Kittery Food Mart, then take it to Fort McClary and actually have lunch at the picnic area overlooking the water.

The simple good thing

Pick up pizza, a sub or another easy lunch at Kittery Food Mart, then drive to Fort McClary and eat at the picnic area with the bay in front of you.

This is the kind of lunch outing we actually love: inexpensive local food, a beautiful place to sit, no reservation, and no pressure to turn lunch into a restaurant production. The market handles the food; Fort McClary supplies the grass, picnic tables, history and water view.

Accessibility field guide

What we could verify — and what to ask.

“Accessible” is too vague to plan a real day. These are the concrete details we found. Individual needs differ, and venues change.

Verified / published

  • Kittery Food Mart's current menu lists pizza, subs, sandwiches, burgers and other inexpensive takeout options
  • Maine's Bureau of Parks and Lands lists Fort McClary's picnic tables, picnic area and group shelter as accessible
  • Maine's access guide lists Fort McClary's bay views as generally accessible, while the fort/blockhouse and trails are not accessible

Ask before relying on it

  • Market kitchen closing time if arriving late
  • Current Fort McClary hours, seasonal restroom status and parking conditions
  • Whether a special event or demonstration will change noise or crowds

A useful access question

“We’re planning to visit on [date/time]. We need [specific feature/support]. Could you tell us the most direct way to access it, where the closest restroom/break space is, and whether anything scheduled that day will substantially change crowds or the normal route?”
